Wesley College Digital Navigators 2023

On Thursday 26 and Friday 27 October, 25 Year 9 and 25 Year 10 students took on the challenge to become Digital Navigators with Code Avengers.

Digital Navigators is an interactive event over 2 days, followed by online support and exclusive access to the Code Avengers platform. The aim of the workshops is to increase exposure and participation in ICT and STEM education at Wesley College and digital literacy in our school wider community.

Through the workshops, students can see themselves reflected in the subjects, learning, and industry so they feel it's a real option for them - whatever their background.  Wesley was fortunate enough to welcome three special guest speakers to share their experiences and inviting students to join them in the digital and computing industry:

  • Ron Asofa: a Partner Solution Architect for the Pacific Islands, at Amazon Web Services
  • Olivia Mann: Operations Manager for Figured
  • Brett Sarver: Amazon Web Services Skills to Jobs Senior Program Manager

Old boy Sam Nonoa from Program Manager at Puatala, also joined us to share useful life skills around perseverance, resilience and having a growth mindset.

Students gained experience in creating a personal website and online application (app) as well as learning two valuable programming languages: HTML/CSS and Java.  They enjoyed unplugged activities to put into action computational thinking components of algorithms, debugging, decomposition and abstraction.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable two days for the presenting team from Code Avengers, guest speakers and students.  Thank you to old boy TJ Asiata and his company LM4 group for bringing this wonderful experience to our school and connecting us to Code Avengers.  We look forward to strengthening these connections in the days ahead, following in the footsteps of our ancestors who navigated the seas.  Our students will be able to navigate the digital world with confidence and success.
