Term 2 - Sports

We are fast approaching the end of term 2, which means we are well into the winter school sports season.

Here are some results and standings.

Senior Basketball

We have one team competing in the Franklin Zone Secondary Schools competition. Our Senior Boys team after recent grading rounds find themselves contesting the Senior Boys B division this reflects our student’s commitment to their mainstream sport and basketball is a bonus of playing another sport in the same term. The competition rounds are now 3 weeks in with some great results:

Special mention to Year 12 Kava Vainikolo who currently leads the league in offensive rebounds followed closely by Year 13 student Robert Toma-Lemalu who prominently features in many overall league stats.

With competition rounds started it has been pleasing to see the development and progress of our netball teams, in particular, our junior teams. The Year 9s have been in standout form over the last few rounds, and the Year 10s have been guilty of some messy periods of play but looks like they are just warming to their task and ready to put their best foot forward in the upcoming games.  The Senior Mixed team got their first win of the season against Southern Cross winning 29 goals to 3 the team is made up of mostly year 11’s. Our Premier grade has defaulted the last few games due to clashes with rugby games and some unfortunate injuries. Overall midway point the depth and talent coming through has great potential. Results and standings are as follows.

Netball Standings

1ST XV Rugby

Progress has been slow but steady with some very tight bonus point losses the most recent being against St Johns, Hamilton going down 17-20. Like the previous game against St Paul's Collegiate missed opportunities and some crucial handling and decision-making made the difference. The next game up was back at the farm against Whanganui Collegiate both teams looking to stay in the race for semi-finals. A big defensive effort was needed, and the team delivered with a hard-fought 24-14 win.

Our most recent game was against St Johns Hastings a great opportunity to put together a lot of the learnings from previous weeks coming away with the win 61-7. We have one game left in the term away against Rathkeale College in what seems to be a very close 2024 points table and will be an important result needed to progress on.

Girls’ 1st XV Rugby

It’s been a great experience this term for our 1st XV Girls participating in the Chiefs Manawa 1st XV Competition, the team has grown so much over the term. Up against opposition that offers a slightly different style of rugby the girls have grown in confidence and have been playing some great rugby. The team finished their round-robin games with a comprehensive win against New Plymouth Girls High School in New Plymouth. In their first year, the team finished 5th missing out on the semi-finals by 2 points as that famous quote says, “Every journey begins with a single step” and these girls, the coaching and management team have created that opportunity for the next generation to look forward to.

Girl’s 1st XV Rugby vs Midwest Rugby Union

To finish a great week off for the girls they backed up two days later to play the Midwest Rugby Union a touring team from the USA. Staying in touch throughout the contest, in a game of exchanging tries the 1st XV Girls stayed in the arm wrestle for control throughout the 60 minutes but the relentless work from forwards and some impressive individual performances broke the shackles in the final 10 minutes to secure a well-deserved win 36-21.

As we wrap up the term a massive congratulations to the team on their efforts, we look forward to those who are named in rep programs during the school holidays as well as upcoming Top 4 Qualifiers.

Wesley Rugby Teams

We have four teams playing in the Auckland and Counties Manukau Competitions with mixed results and plenty of learnings taken and development at the forefront we look forward to returning in term 3 returning refreshed and ready to finish their respective competitions on a high.
