Derived Grade Exams
Derived Grade Exams 2025
Senior students (Years 11 - 13) will sit derived grade exams in Week 9 of Term 3 (Monday 8 - Friday 12 September).
We encourage all parents and caregivers to ensure their children are taking these exams seriously and making the most of the study time provided to prepare for their exams.
The Importance of These Exams
Derived Grade Application
It is very important that all students complete these exams to the best of their abilities as these will form the basis of any derived grades that students may need to apply for in the event of an absence due to legitimate reasons such as:
Serious Illness or pandemic
Family bereavement
Significant injury or trauma at the time immediately before or during exams that may impede their ability to complete any or all exams
Natural disaster
Feedback and Preparation for Final NCEA Exams
Derived grade exams provide students with necessary feedback about their next learning steps and what they will need to prioritise in their studies in the lead up to the final external exams. They also allow students to experience formal exam conditions.
Authenticity of Results
As part of this process, we have tools and procedures that enable us to ensure authenticity and that the work being submitted is that of the students.
Exam Timetable and Venues
The exam timetable will be available for students during early term 3 and will be posted on the school website and emailed to all whaaanau. Each day during Week 9, the exam schedule will be announced at chapel. All exams will be carried out in the chapel.
Exam Clashes
Students who have 2 exams at the same time will be provided with an alternative arrangement for one of the exams.
Workshops
Some practical subjects will be offering workshops for students to complete projects. Venues will be communicated by individual subject teachers. If there is a clash with an exam students must attend the exam and where possible alternatives will be arranged with their workshop teacher.
NZQA Logins
All senior students will receive instructions in Term 3 on how to log in to NZQA so that they can:
Complete their digital practice exams.
Complete their digital final exams.
Check their final results in January 2026.
All NCEA students must have a functioning login to NZQA. These logins are managed by NZQA, not by the college.
