Winstone Cup Interhouse Speech Competition 2025

The Wesley College English Department was proud to host this year’s Winstone Cup Interhouse Speech Competition, an evening that brought together the powerful voices, stories, and talents of our students from across the four houses. We warmly welcomed all speakers, alongside their whānau and friends, who came to support them.

We were honoured to have Dr Radilaite Cammock and Mr Tristan Ah-Sui serve as our judges for the night, offering their expertise and insight. Our Masters of Ceremony, Moeata Ngataki and Akesa Sosefo, guided the event with confidence and warmth.

The competition featured three grades—Junior, Intermediate, and Senior—with each speaker delivering thoughtful and engaging speeches across a wide range of themes.

Junior Grade

· Jayden Namoa (Stanton House) – The benefits of boarding school

· Sam-Sireli Togiatama (Winstone House) – The importance of self-love and self-appreciation

· Maka ‘Ata’ata (School House) – Culture & Identity

· Vasi Tau (Simmonds House) – Pressure

Intermediate Grade

· Kepu Tu’uheava (Stanton House) – Grief

· Palu Tuionetoa (Simmonds House) – Forgiveness

· Mikaera Matthews-Borell (School House) – Tiny changes, big results

· Katea Tohi (Winstone House) – Expectation

Senior Grade

· Catherine Anitoni (School House) – For granted

· Lini Puamau (Winstone House) – Walk of shame

· Lineti Tu’uta (Simmonds House) – When the beat drops

· Rachel Sikulu (Stanton House) – A restored soul

A brief intermission included a spoken word performance, after which our judges announced the results, recognising the outstanding effort, courage, and creativity shown by all competitors.

The evening concluded with fellowship and shared kai, with guests invited to join the participants and their families for supper in the Dining Room.

He mihi nui to everyone involved—our speakers, judges, MCs, staff, and supporters. Events like the Winstone Cup remind us of the power of student voice and the strength of our Wesley College community.
